Oppo, remember that eclipse from this post a few months ago?
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Well, I bought it. Here are pictures. And some letters and numbers as well..
About the car...
It’s a 1992 (Built August 1991) Mirsubishi Eclipse GSX Turbo, AWD, manual transmission, grey cloth seats, which are quite nice, a chunky shifter, chunky steering wheel, everything about the car looks and feels like it: just been Lopped off of something with a nuclear weapon. The steering wheel is fat, the shift knob feels like a playstation-u remote, and it has a boosht guage. It has been sitting since 2001, when it was parked, needing a clutch. It was then parked in a driveway, until I came along, saw the car, and on a whim, went up and knocked on the door asking about it. That was in June. It is now time for me to finish those darn college applications. The wheels were all frozen, or maybe the calipers were, I don’t know.. Speaking of not knowing things, I don’t know where to even start with something like this... Making sure it runs, is the priority, because that’s like, slightly crucial.. Second is tires, brakes, struts, and some springs. Also some spacers, so I can drive over stuff during the winter. Skidplates too.. I want to rallycross it, and hoon generally, so that’s important to me. Maybe a light bar at some point. The big thing though, is budget. I only have some two thousand dollars or so (lets call it $2500) budgeted for the ressucitation of this beauty. Please let me know if I belong in a nuthouse. Before I burn all my money. Big expenses I see are:
Clutch- $250
Tires-$450
Fluids, filters- $300
Brakes and suspension-$500
Short shifter kit and shift knob-$200
Detailing, cleaning, paint refinishing+new headliner-$500
$300- miscellaneous shit that breaks. Which will probably be way more than $300...
Halp...
Displacing small rodent families with a piece of wood
Truck barely pulled it out (had to use 4low)
Yeah, so that’s where it came from...
And that’s what it looks like as a result.
It has most certainly seen better days
The interior is actually not bad... The weird seatbelt thingy needs to go... But other than that, it’s clean, 112k miles, no tears or dash cracks, steering wheel leather is good, and the 2.0 liter turbo-4 purrs like a dead kitten. The leaves there in the picture are from me moving in and out of it to steer. Oh, and how much did I pay for it, you ask? It’ll be revealed when I do a Tvarish-esque article later on this winter, when I can hopefully run it in a rallycross... And then mayyyybeeee sell it.
But not before it looks like this (minus the decals)
Oh, and I bought this too!
$300, should be able to flip for $3000 once running and driving. The guy ran the thing out of fuel, and can’t figure out why it’s not starting (injector lines need priming and bleeding, which is a bitch to do, but free to do), so the eclipse budget could effectively double if that happens...

It’s a good concept to have.
But a car that’s been sitting for nearly 15 years, literal masses of work are likely to be needed to get it back on the road. Sometimes it’s worth it, sometimes it isn’t. What fluids WERE in it when you picked it up?

Spend the money you were allocating towards the shift knob to something else.

The car really needs a short shifter kit, it’s super sloppy and there’s quite a bit of play in the linkage. I can forsee another lax ball shifter on that car, I tend to use those as shift knobs a loooot. And at $1.88, is there anything better?

Hate to say it, but unless they paid you to take the car away, you’re going to take a loss.
The drive shaft is probably shot, or at least play in the u joint, the turbo is probably shot, and I’d be willing to bet the compression is off on all 4 cylinders.
But I wish you good luck, and am a slightly jealous for you finding a stock 1g AWD DSM.
Now change the front end to the 1Ga front, because pop up headlights are infinitely better. LOL

when it was parked 15 yeas ago (srsly kudos for the spot), it was parked petty darn original. If IF you just restored it completely it would be mighty cool and maybe you could get a return..
Anyway aside from that random thought yeah do the rally x dsmtuners.com has a few members with suggestions
Also you should turn the truck into a flatbed/tower.

Wat?
You have $200 budgeted towards a short shifter kit. Now it is coming out to $1.88?
Buy polyurethane bushings and call it a day.

Cool car!
But I gotta say it... don’t spend another penny without getting under the car with adequate lighting and doing a very thorough inspection. It’s been sitting for 15 years, and being parked in the mud and grass can really make a mess of the undercarriage.

Not bad.
As a guy who’s in his 2nd year of a Japanese project car (2001 Prelude with an engine swap), there are always unforeseen things that will cost you more time and money than you had expected. Good luck.

It’s a DSM. If Craigslist has taught me anything, what you need to do is the following:
1. Get it running.
2. Put the biggest turbo you can on it.
3. Blow the motor.
4. Pull the engine and transmission
5. Sell as-is for $3000 firm OBO, I know what I got, no lowballers
6. ???
7. PROFIT!

Good luck finding stock springs, they apparently don’t exist. Mine is fwd so maybe that’s why. Raising it for winter duty is a good idea, these first gens are low enough to easily scrape the bumper from the factory. Things will break and you will get intimate with this car, learning a ton in the process.
I hope you didn’t pay much for it, you will be replacing a lot of parts and there are other parts that you really want to replace while you’re there and then $1000 later you still need some little odd and ends. You will spend way more money than you think,
ask me how I know
.
All that said, you definitely can get it running for less than $2500 and as long as you stay on top of maintenance you’ll be fine. They’re fun, and the AWD even more so, you have a pretty good starting point compared to me!
Feel free to ask any questions you’ve got, mines FWD but I’ve got some pretty intimate knowledge of this platform now!

You’re speaking my language. But it would have to be in sufficient physical condition for consideration at this point.

Well, let me assure you that it certainly has a physical condition. And a 20/22R engine with a 5-speed and a set of Yamaha R1 carbs on it. It may have my roommate’s name on the title but don’t let that discourage you.

What does it need
Tohru

10/26/2015 at 22:53 | 0 |
The carbs need to be tuned, the cage needs to be removed and possibly replaced with one that’s actually legal for LeMons use, it’s missing the door windows, it needs a front bumper, fenders, inner and outer rocker panels, floor pan repair, rear quarter panel repair, minor trunk floor repair...

First off these wheels are Hot. Second Good luck. My GVR-4 has been a bitch, but awesome. Hopefully this GSX is good to you. I can ensure you that the rallycross will be worth it, and you won’t want to sell it if you do finish it.
Also these guys will be you friends. http://www.jnztuning.com

The stock Eclipse shift is actually pretty great. I just replaced the bushings on mine and switched out the Galant shifter for a G2 Talon shifter and it’s awesome.
